TYPES OF GUM DISEASE

Periodontitis is a disease characterized by inflammation and destruction of the tissues surrounding the teeth, as well as the supporting structures of the teeth themselves. Periodontitis can spread deep below the gumline to the bone and ligaments that support the teeth. Unfortunately, it causes irreversible processes, such as bone resorption in the tooth socket, which in turn leads to tooth loosening and loss.

SIGNS OF PERIODONTITIS

  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Exposed tooth roots
  • Increased sensitivity to hot and cold food
  • Loose teeth
  • Discomfort and pain while chewing

Periodontosis is an outdated term that was previously used to describe a dystrophic disease of the periodontal tissues. This condition is characterized by a gradual decrease in the alveolar bone level without visible signs of inflammation. In modern medical classification and terminology, this term is not used to describe the condition of periodontal tissues.

SIGNS OF PERIODONTOSIS

  • Exposed tooth roots, which may indicate gum tissue loss
  • A pale pink gum color, which may indicate poor blood circulation or other issues. Healthy gums have a dark pink hue.
  • Discomfort, itching in the gums, which are signs of inflammation or infection in the periodontal tissues
  • The presence of wedge-shaped defects in the enamel, which arise from enamel wear
  • Increased tooth sensitivity can be a consequence of various problems, including gum tissue loss and the presence of wedge-shaped defects

Gum recession is a process in which the volume of gum tissue decreases, resulting in a lower gum line and the exposure of the tooth's neck and root. This condition can affect both the upper and lower jaws. Recession not only creates cosmetic imperfections but can also lead to serious dental problems and even tooth loss.

CAUSES

  • Trauma
  • An improperly fitted restoration or crown that irritates the gums
  • Bite problems
  • Incorrect home care (rough brushing or an unsuitable toothbrush)
  • As a consequence of diseases (periodontitis, metabolic disorders, endocrine and vascular diseases)

CAUSES

arrow

Insufficient home oral hygiene and lack of regular professional cleanings lead to the accumulation of dental plaque and bacteria, which convert into tartar and negatively affect periodontal tissues.

arrow

Excessive consumption of sugar and carbohydrates creates a favorable environment for bacterial growth.

arrow

Smoking worsens the condition of the gums and promotes inflammatory processes in periodontal tissues.

arrow

Systemic diseases (diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and immunodeficiency states) increase the risk of developing periodontitis.

arrow

Improperly performed dental procedures (incorrectly placed crowns or restorations) can compromise gum health and contribute to the development of periodontitis.

arrow

Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause.

Genetic predisposition.

Imbalanced lifestyle (stress, lack of sleep, and poor diet) affects the immune system and the overall health of the body.

STAGES OF GUM RECESSION TREATMENT

Modern medicine offers several treatment methods, the choice of which depends on the severity of the damage to the multi-layered tissues of the oral mucosa.

In the early stages of recession, treatment without surgical intervention is possible. This involves eliminating the factors that irritate the gums:

  • Performing regular professional oral hygiene;
  • Removing dental plaque and tartar;
  • Replacing improperly fitted fillings;
  • Correcting the bite;
  • Improving home care for the teeth. The doctor provides the patient with recommendations on the proper choice of toothbrush, toothpaste, and the importance of using interdental floss and mouthwash.
  • Treatment with plasma or hyaluronic acid. Plasmotherapy involves injecting plasma obtained from the patient's own blood. Platelets contained in the plasma promote the rapid restoration of damaged tissues. Hyaluronic acid injections support the exchange of substances in the gum tissues, accelerate metabolism, reduce inflammation, and bleeding of the gums. In some cases, doctors recommend using plasmotherapy together with hyaluronic acid injections to achieve a faster and higher-quality effect.

In severe cases of recession, flap surgery is performed. During these procedures, the volume of soft tissue is increased using a graft from the patient's own mucosa. This process is similar to plastic surgery and is performed under local anesthesia.

Чи можна вилікувати складні захворювання ясен вдома гомеопатичними засобами?
quote

What can cause gum prolapse?

If the cause of gum recession is not identified and treatment is postponed, the process of exposing the roots will continue, leading to the loss of teeth or implants.

Can the wrong choice of personal care products cause bleeding gums?

Using a brush with bristles that are too stiff, improper floss and brush brushing techniques can cause bleeding gums.

At Symmetrica, we take into account the individual needs of each patient when selecting oral hygiene products.

How often do you need to come for preventive examinations and what signs should be considered as indicators of gum problems?

For preventive examination and hygiene, it is recommended to visit the dentist at least once every 6 months. However, if the patient is under the supervision of a periodontist, an individual visit schedule is developed for him.

Do not ignore:

  • bleeding gums when brushing your teeth or biting food
  • changes in the appearance of the gums: discoloration (redness, pallor), swelling, pain
  • the appearance of an unpleasant taste in the mouth or smell from the oral cavity.

With any of these signs, it is recommended to consult a periodontist as soon as possible for diagnosis and treatment.

What is the periodontal map for?

The periodontal map is compiled to conduct a comprehensive diagnosis of periodontal tissues and to plan the treatment of periodontitis. It serves as the basis for the development of an individual treatment plan, the selection of hygiene products and recommendations for oral care. The periodontal map is also used to control the treatment, allowing to record changes in the periodontal tissues and evaluate the effectiveness of the measures applied. By comparing periodontal maps in different visits, the doctor monitors the condition of the periodontal, which allows assessing the effectiveness of the applied methods of treatment.

Why is it important to ensure that the gums are healthy?

The gums serve as a support for the teeth and help hold them in place, protect the bone and roots of the teeth from external influences, and also nourish them. Early detection and treatment of gum problems can prevent further complications, because the condition of the gums affects the general condition of the body through the relationship with the circulatory system.
